To measure the coefficient of thermal expansion of copper, steel and aluminium

Apparatus Used

• Linear expansion apparatus,(included) 
• metal rod(s)(included), 
• tubing(not included), 
• steam boiler(not included), 
• hot plate / heater(not included), 
• drainage dump(not included), 
• thermometer(not included) 

PROCEDURE

When steam is passed through Brass pipe , the inner rod get expanded and the reading can be taken with the help of Spherometer fitted at side of the test inner rod. By changing the different test rod, the expansion is noted. Hence you can know the expansion of different metals.

CONSTRUCTION

• BRASS PIPE it consists of a steam jacket(brass pipe) 50 cm long & 2.5 cm dia with inlet & outlet tubes for steam & opening for a thermometer 

• SPHEROMETER fitted with spherometer which reads up to 0.01 mm. The exact setting at which it contacts the rod may be Indicated by using an electric contacting circuit, such as a dry cell or buzzer. 

• TEST RODS Complete with 3 test rods.copper, steel , aluminium 2 mm dia, one rod is fiited in the center of the brass pipe & two are fitted in the lower supporting rod 

• IRON BASE the brass pipe is fitted amidst two arc shaped cast iron base duly painted, fixed with two 52 cms long 3/8” m.s.chromed rods.
