Product Description

EXPERIMENT

The aim of this experiment is to measure the thermal conductivity of rubber.

Apparatus Used

  • A steam generator,
  • A copper calorimeter,
  • A length of rubber tubing,
  • A thermometer (0 – 50 oC)
  • water, access to a balance (± 0.1 gm),
  • A bunsen burner or a hot plate
  • Iron stand with clamp and boss head,
  • thread.
  • stopwatch

PROCEDURE

Measure the mass of water in the calorimeter (m).  Set up the apparatus as shown in the diagram.

Record the initial temperature of the water (qo). Pass steam through the tube and record the final temperature of the water (q1) after a known time (t).Measure the length (L) of tubing beneath the water surface, and measure also the internal and external diameters of the tubing and hence find the internal and external radii (r and R).

Description of apparatus:

The apparatus is shown in fig. (1). A known length l of the rubber tube IS  immersed in weighed amount of water contained in a calorimeter. The steam from a boiler B IS allowed to flow through the tube from one end which comes out from the other end. A wooden screen is placed between the boiler and calorimeter. The initial temperature as well as the final temperature of the water is recorded with the help of the themometer T.
