Product Description

AIM

To determine the surface tension of water by capillary rise method

CONSTRUCTION

  • An aluminum table : 10 cm dia with a stem of 12 cm can be lowered or raised to a desired height & can be tightened with a thumb screw(course moment) & fine adjustment is provided by a flush in arrangement.
  • Fitted on a circular base : with 3 leveling screws.
  • Capillary tube clamp : a metal frame , on which 3 capillary glass tubes of 10 cm long  having different internal dia, are clamped with the help of small metal brackets.
  • The 9 mm rod : is also attached to a metal plate, so that the complete clamp can be held in any position.
  • Accessory Required at   Extra: Beaker, Traveling Microscope

THEORY

When a capillary tube of fine bore is dipped in a breaker containing liquid, rise or fall of a liquid level inside the capillary tube is known as capillarity.A curved surface of liquid is called meniscus. It is concave for water and water like liquids due to higher adhesive force than the cohesive force. It is convex for mercury and mercury like liquids due to higher cohesive force than the adhesive force.]

PROCEDURE

when a Beaker is placed on the aluminum disc and the three capillaries are dipped, water rises in the capillaries at different levels according to their inner dia and capillary action
